I Want Something Exciting to Happen

Naomie Sunner’s new works see her transform (from a bored punk computer geek) into a contemporary superheroine, on a mission to save the world. In the form of a comic book, she begins an exploration on what it means to be female and powerful. Themeda, as Naomie Sunner’s alter ego, plays the part of the ultimate superheroine. Her superheroic fantasy is enacted in the shadow of her male counterparts, and the play that results is simultaneously a parody of her impossible desire to become a superheroine, as well as (a parody) of the excessive masculinity of superheroes.
The first part in a series exploring femininity and power, Chicks will save us all: Themeda, is part of Naomie Sunner’s body of work for her MFA at the Victorian College of the Arts. Expanding the performative nature of her work into narrative form, she is researching and developing characters which question and attempt to subvert normative ideas of gender roles.
